Finding Yourself on the Tree - Your Tree Coordinates

Every person in the database has been assigned a number -- in correspondance with Gordon, you will most likely see that number after your name ..... this is your "family tree branch number".

This number identifies exactly where you are in the family -- and on a given family tree drawing.

Here is a diagram with examples to help understand the numbering system:

Each family tree in our family tree orchard is assigned a letter designation. Letters being used so far are listed to the left. This letter represents the progenitor of the part of the family shown on any given tree drawing.

Children of the progenitor are numbered in order of birth... In the generic example shown here: J1 thru J(10).
The children of each of the children in the first family are subsequently numbered in birth order within each of their own families.
In the example diagram above, J3 had three children. They would be numbered J31 thru J33.
Each family in turn would be numbered similarly, as can be seen on the diagram.

Other characteristics of the branch numbering system:

  • Families with 10 or more children - the two digits are shown in parentheses that represent one child. Example: J(10)
  • A single digit in parentheses indicates an adopted child. Example: J31(1)
  • A dash preceding the digit indicates a step child. Example: J33-1
  • A step child adopted by the parent of this family is indicated like: J64(-1)
  • A spouse - Example: J333-S
If more than one spouse, Example: J643-S1 and J643-S2, etc.
